Frusciante ha desarrollado una activa carrera musical en solitario, ya que ha editado nueve álbumes y ha colaborado con artistas como Josh Klinghoffer y Joe Lally bajo el nombre de Ataxia. Al contrario que con su carrera en Red Hot Chili Peppers, sus trabajos en solitario tienden hacia el rock experimental, la música ambient, la new wave y la música electrónica.
Frusciante se unió a Red Hot Chili Peppers en 1988, después de la muerte por sobredosis de Hillel Slovak. Su primera aparición fue en el álbum de 1989 Mother's Milk, para después grabar el clásico Blood Sugar Sex Magik, que se convirtió en un auténtico éxito. La repentina fama y las constantes giras hicieron que Frusciante abandonase la formación en 1992, y se recluyó en su casa para volverse adicto a la heroína y grabar una serie de discos en solitario.
Ya en 1998, el guitarrista completó con éxito un proceso de rehabilitación que le permitió regresar a los Red Hot Chili Peppers el mismo año y grabar con ellos el disco Californication. Desde entonces, ha permanecido como miembro estable de la formación y uno de sus principales compositores. Fue elegido por la revista Rolling Stone en el puesto número 18 de la Lista de los 100 guitarristas más grandes de todos los tiempos.
Frusciante nació en Queens, el 5 de marzo de 1970. Su padre, John Frusciante Sr., era pianista y juez, y su madre, Gail Frusciante, era una vocalista que dejó su carrera musical para convertirse en ama de casa. La familia Frusciante se trasladó a Tucson, Arizona, y posteriormente a Florida, donde su padre ejerce actualmente la profesión de juez. Cuando sus padres se separaron, Frusciante y su madre se mudaron a Santa Monica, California. Un año después, se trasladaron nuevamente, esta vez a Mar Vista, en el extrarradio de Los Ángeles, con el padrastro de John. Según éste, el nuevo novio de su madre le «apoyaba», y le «hacía sentir bien».Ya en su adolescencia, Frusciante entró en contacto con la juventud angelina inmersa en el punk rock.
A los nueve años, comenzó a escuchar a The Germs, y a los diez ya sabía tocar en su guitarra casi todas las canciones del álbum (GI), y comenzó a recibir clases de guitarra. A los once años descubrió a guitarristas como Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page o Jimi Hendrix, y poco después escuchó por primera vez a Frank Zappa.[4] Durante su adolescencia llegaba a tocar sus temas hasta quince horas al día. A los dieciséis años, Frusciante dejó el instituto para dedicarse a la música, y se mudó al centro de Los Ángeles para mejorar sus técnicas musicales.
